Prof Smith: Actually, this is incorrect. Any thoughts why?
You: I think the word ‘hypo’ means low, ‘hyper’ means high and ‘iso’ means same. So hypotonic is lower concentration of solute, hypertonic is higher concentration of solute and isotonic is the same solute concentration in the solution.
Prof. Smith: Well done! A very nice way to remember the terms!
Which is the correct answer now?
Answer 1:
hypotonic is 0.9% NaCl, hypertonic is distilled water, isotonic is 6% NaCl
Answer 2:
hypotonic is distilled water, hypertonic is 6% NaCl, isotonic is 0.9% NaCl
